Fire Safety Awareness + Observation

Are you planning a field trip to the FIRE STATION?
Are you talking about fire safety?
Fire prevention?

Welcome to Seven Hills School in the heart of Cincinati.
How awesome are these 'life-size' fire chief self portraits?
I am especially appreciative of the children's fashion sense.
LUV LUV LUV their individualized, painted shirts!
Each fire helmet is personalized with handwritten names.
These glories are from my latest school visit, making an author-Illustrator presentation.
It's such a pleasure to share here what I see on my travels!
Fire Safety. Fire Prevention. Fire Chiefs.

These projects are 'life-size' in proportion. I'm guessing that the photo faces must have been made from glorious 8x10 sized images.
It's obvious that the students worked long and hard on their t-shirt paintings.

Now from these 'mature' kindergarten portraits, return to an earlier age.
What does painting in preschool look like on this same theme?
Here's an entire wall of "Fire Safety" art at St. Marcus Lutheran School.

I'm especially impressed to see the preschool 'fire safety' paintings displayed with the books that were read in the classroom. What a great way to tie the project together with the study! Links to Literacy! Immediate feedback and reminders every time the children re-enter their classroom.

It's amazing to me that both of these schools (WI + OH) have SO much work to share that it has overgrown being displayed on a traditional bulletin board and takes over the entire expanse of the wall in the hallway. What a great way to share the work taking place with parents and visiting Author/Illustrator types.

Here's the quilt illustration that I created for my picture book, "Red, White and Blue" in response to the events of September 9-11.

Our very own PreK+K Sharing collaborative blog has an earlier A.MAZ.ING article compiled by the brilliant Ayn. It details all sorts of ideas about make-believe and pretend centers and one of the options outlined in her article is a firehouse.

  3. This is great. I think more needs to be done in schools to inform them of the importance of fire safety and hey, we may now have some more budding fire fighters on our hands!
