PATTERN SONG: A LISTENING GAME

Pattern Song Goes Digital in Pattern RoundUP at RainbowsWithinReach

Jeopardy BONUS question's answer of the day:
"Where do these songs of yours 'come' from?"
*****This article has affiliate links for your convenience.

Once upon a time, ages ago, a dreamy music-lady was zipping thru Ye Olde' Worthington library on north High Street. While rushing in to gather her yet-to-be-driving daughter doing research, she was stopped in her tracks by a book prominently on display. Stepping in closer, it was like the natural hush of the library exploded with confetti and balloons a plenty. Oh happy day!

"Pattern Fish" by Trudy Harris at RainbowsWithinReach

Immediately. That instant. Completely. Totally.  (ABAB)
I was in LUV. In LUV. Total LUV! I tell you, it was LUV!!!! (ABAB)

I knew without reading about Trudy Harris, that she was a teacher. She got it. She knew how to break it down. She knew how to dissect and make simple the complex. Of course she was a teacher. Brilliant. LUV'd it in that moment!

"Pattern Fish Art Response" in Pattern RoundUP at RainbowsWithinReach

With her delightful word-play, she established a pattern:
"Bubble-pop, bubble-pop, bubble-pop, bubble......"
and then the oh-so-clever illustration came to an end. You were forced to turn the page, you'd run out of text, there were no more words. What comes next? Every person ever reading the book forevermore would be squealing: POP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Algebra. Algebra I tell you! LUV'd it! Inspired me!!! Solve for X!
So I went home and started thinking... how can I create this same experience of establishing a pattern IN A SONG and then give only that initial bit/front end of the pattern so that listeners must solve for X, as they sing? Easy, peasy, lemon squeezy!

Weaving Project as Exploration of Math Patterns
As was my way at the time, I got immediately to the writing and then recording of this whole concept and "Pattern Song" was born. {Clever title, that one?} I was also sufficiently brilliant to include the 'instrumental only' track on the CD recording. That way brilliant teachers everywhere could have their students create their own verses with their own patterns. For those of you keeping track, that was back in the day of "Debbie's Ditties 4: Come Dance S'more!"

ARE YOU READY FOR THIS?

Have I got some INCREDIBLE NEWS!!! I put out the all-call for 'pattern blog posts.' THIS JUST IN! My own bestie, Carolyn had already given her 'royal-est-of-all-royal treatments' to this very book! Turns out my favorite is one of her favorites, too! Well, duh! It's an instant classic! She has given me special permission to dip joyously into her article! GET THIS! She has a 47 page FREE printable that goes with this very book! We are kindred spirits, Carolyn and meeeeeeeee!

***By the way. If you're as excited as I was about this whole concept, once you find "Pattern Fish" you owe it to yourself to go whole hog and get "Pattern Bugs" on your wish list as well! Ya think?

"Pattern Bugs" by Trudy Harris (Pattern RoundUP at RainbowsWIthinReach)

Guess what I learned just today? Pattern recognition has never been a part of the Common Core Standards!?!?! This comes as real news to me. Dinosaur Debbie here.
I wrote this song when patterns and pattern recognition were en vogue pour les enfants. NOT so much, 2013? Seriously?

{Don't get me started.} Ye ol' art teacher in me just wants to cry. Sad. How can we
not be 'teaching' patterns to young children? As a visual learner I'm ALLLLL about patterns! I LUV me my patterns. I LUV 'em so much I wrote 'em this song!

So I've spent today in 'conversation' with the experts.
They have attempted to bring me out of my bubble.
They have shared all manner of correlation of CCSS standards for my project
"Pattern Song"
are you ready for this?
They're ELA standards rather than Math.

We were getting just slightly flippant and opinionated.
(It's a little think-tank under the radar, so we're allowed to share opinions.)

I don't want to get anyone into trouble,
so I'll just share the standard that we determined:

DCSS. Patterns.K.1!!!!!!!!!!!!

***That stands for: Debbie Clement thinks Patterns are critical in Kindergarten!
and YES. You may quote me on that!

Due to all of this 'research-among-friends'....
I have learned via my FB fanpage that Kansas has ADDED patterns to their interpretation of CCSS.
So people it can be done.
MAKE A RUCUS!
If Kansas can do it, so can others.

Oh. And of course Texas is doin' its own thang anywho.
Turns out Texas believes in patterns, too!
So there's two states to craft into my upcoming travel plans!

I have the t-shirt from the Kansas airport that says,
"Don't make me send my flying monkeys."
{OK. Mine's slightly different than this choice, but once I remembered how to insert Amazon links, I couldn't resist. Besides my shirt's in FL currently.}

It's a great song.
You'll LUV it.

Powerpoint slides for "Pattern Song" via Debbie Clement, now digital download
PowerPoint slides of the 5 verses, plus intro and conclusion, too!
It's NOW in a zipped file!
The file has a powerpoint presentation of the words of the song!
There are 2 Mp3's included, too.
One for the sung song with instrumental.
One for JUST the instrumental version.....
so you can make your own patterns!

How do patterns and symmetry relate?
"The Imagination Tree" has this glorious article using nature's beauty.
Go see how she got this outcome.

Symmetry and pattern making with shells

Deb Chitwood used Carolyn's printable mentioned above
in her incredible Ocean RoundUP
at our collaborative blog "PreK+K Sharing."

Fish Pattern Math Activity

I instigated a dig through photographs at
and she was able to locate an activity from years back that hadn't made the blog.
Special thanks for the extra-credit effort!

We're always motivated to make patterns when we can EAT THEM!

Here's a terrific idea from Terri at "Kinder Kapers"
think 'paper chains' and think pattern possibilities.

Can you imagine the excitement at "Kindergarten Faith" when her kiddos
get to go outside and make GIGANTIC AB patterns on the playground in chalk?

Faith also has a printable for sale in her winter pack that features pattern making.

This article went live prematurely.
There are additional ideas to be added.
Sorry for the confusion.
Under construction as usual.
You'll be glad that you came back, I promise.

  1. Oh Debbie no one could ever be mad at your for posting before something was ready! It happens to the best of us and just reminds us that no one is perfect! I have done the same thing and other posting mishaps plenty of times. I am sure the song will be well worth the wait! It seems fabulous!

  2. We teach patterns in kindergarten at my school. Still following the Texas state standards. Texas still loves patterns. WOO! #gotexas

  3. I am so glad that you wrote this, Debbie! As a kindergarten teacher, I am so sad that they removed patterns from the CCSS. Luckily for me, our principal stands behind our determination to keep patterns in our curriculum and we ARE teaching patterns this Fall! Sometimes the "higher ups" do not always know what they are doing!

    Blessings,

  4. Debbie, I'm thrilled you included my printable. Thanks so much! This is a great post. I can't believe the TRUDY HARRIS books aren't required reading for all parents and teachers, they are truly important for math development.

You are so wonderful, Debbie! Thanks for really understanding how to educate young children in child-centered and child-friendly ways. Your work is super excellent!

  5. I love that you included my paper chains in your article! I mean...I love me some holiday decorations where I can say, Wait we were learning here, it just happens to look like Christmas decorations. haha.

Here is what I tell people who tell me that patterns aren't in the standards....we were told that things students need to know to be successful at mastering any of the standards are embedded in the standards. I mean seriously how can we expect students to understand geometry and multiplication if they don't know how to find and create patterns? What about spelling and decoding? Both rely on recognizing patterns. I am also glad that our principal lets us teach those things we feel are important for our kinderkids to know.
