Top of the Colosseum:
So there we are up in the top of the Verona Colosseum overlooking the city square below, when we hear a distant 'announcement' over a loudspeaker in Italian ..... remember, we're in the city somewhat by 'accident' because we had only suddenly realized that we didn't have a reservation in the entire country of Italy and Verona had an available room that we could afford. We can't really hear the announcement and neither of us speak more than our two word vocabulary in Italian..... so we wait to see what happens.
Around the city square comes an old US Army truck, flying the American flag. What? Next comes a Red Cross truck, followed by jeeps and motorcycles, and tanks and half-tracks and amphibious vehicles. Most of which are flying the stars and stripes! What? What on earth are we witnessing just below? It's a parade. It's definitely a parade. We have arrived in the top of the Colosseum at the EXACT moment, for us to watch a parade unfurl below in the Italian Verona square. What exactly? It's a parade of OLD US vehicles. Apparently most are old Army vehicles. With US flags flying. Everyone driving the old vehicles are wearing uniforms. Looks like old Army uniforms. What? We attempt to imagine what we are watching? In the top of the Colosseum we have no one to ask. Mean time, the individual vehicles are beginning to 'mass' in the far side of the square. Four across, sometimes five. Dozens and dozens by now. What exactly have we stumbled upon? We have our ideas, but we have to leave the Colosseum's perch to find out for certain. (stay tuned for more details.)
